Zi wei dou shu

紫微斗數

The Zi Wei Dou Shu concept was devised by a Taoist named Lu Chun Yang (呂純陽). It was then developed by Chen Xi Yi (陳希夷) during the Song Dynasty and later on Luo Hong Xian (羅洪先) during the Ming Dynasty to the present day format[1]. Its exact origin, however, is still debated among the different schools, and should not be taken as a guaranteed historical context.

Chinese Astrology has always been closely intertwined with Astronomy. Gifted astronomer/astrologers were recruited as officials to work in Imperial Courts during the dynastic eras. In those days, astrological charts were delineated for the Emperor as his personal fate has a direct bearing on that of his kingdom. The court astrologers played an important role in determining the successor to the throne also.

Astrologers observed the stars and noticed that among so many stars, only one was seemingly stationary while the rest revolved around it. As it was also the brightest, the star was named the "Emperor Star" - the celestial equivalent of the Emperor.

Ziwei is an ancient Chinese astrology historically serving royal families only. More precisely it is a fortune telling methodology. It is believed that Ziwei has been passed on from the Sung Dynasty, it therefore has a history of over a thousand years.

Basically each person will have a almost unique Ziwei chart which is formed by placing the “symbols”(stars) into the 12 different “houses” according to his/her birth time (year, month, day and hour). From the chart, the Ziwei practitioner is able to analyze the trend of this life and the best of all, to predict what would be the outcome of a particular issue. This is just like economists predict the economic cycle by graph and charts.

It sounds mysterious, but the ground is based on the statistical analysis of lots of data collected over many years and many generations.

Compared with other astrology, Ziwei is rather complex. We can proudly say that it is able to serve the large population of the world, of course, in a very defined and almost unique way.

Ziwei is composed of over 100 "stars". Each person's birth year, month, day, hour and sex determine the arrangement of the "stars" in the Ziwei Chart. With this complex combination, Ziwei can generate 1,382,400 charts. Although it is not possible for each individual to possess a unique chart, we can still tell the differences of each life track by analyzing the effects brought by the change of the decades and years.

There are thousands of people born at the same time, while some are fortunate, others are not. Why?
In Ziwei, one Chinese hour can generate 2-3 charts. Therefore, even twins may have different charts. Many people, however, still share one chart, will their lives be exactly the same?

Ziwei only displays the "nature" and "time" of the possible events. The astrologist, with his/her experience and logical analysis, is then able to determine what would happen. People born in different places have different backgrounds, social communities and environments. Therefore, people sharing the same chart do have the same "nature", but actual events may be very different.

Ziwei is not a fatalistic astrology. According to Ziwei, in aspects of our life such as business, our careers and romance, we are master of our fate. Events like accidents, however, can be foretold, are difficult to avoid.

The Logic of Ziwei

Compared with other astrology, Ziwei is rather complex. We can proudly say that it is able to serve the large population of the world, of course, in a very defined and almost unique way.

The Hidden Language

Ziwei methodology is composed of the analysis of over a hundred ‘stars’.

‘Stars’ are Symbols. This is most important that we do not regard the different positions of these stars in the space as having significance. This is not the case. Ziwei simply borrows the names. That’s it.

Each symbol consists of one or more natures. When decoding a Ziwei Chart, certain natures appear significantly in one year, and others in another year. If a particular nature is seen, there is great probability that something relating to this nature will occur.

For example, if the nature is ‘fire’, the indication may be a burn, a scald or a fire disaster. If, however an other symbol indicating the nature of ‘smoke’ (added nature) also appears, then the greatest probability will be ‘fire disaster’, if however, the added nature is ‘water’, the greatest probability is ‘a scald’.

Once a specific pattern is formed, and you are unaware of it, and fall into its track, then the outcome will be just as Ziwei expected.

On the other hand, if you can avoid it, the outcome will be completely different.

Certainly, it is not easy for us to retrieve some situations like disasters, illnesses. However, there are still many aspects of our life that we will be able to change, e.g. when making business decisions.

The nature of each individual is given when born. It is therefore impossible for everybody to attain the same level of achievement as Mr. Bill Gates. However, to upgrade a B grade to B+ or A- is not impossible.

The life profile

Ziwei breaks the life profile into decades. As life goes on, the wheel of the Ziwei Chart turns as well. Therefore, the different Houses will all move forward to the position of the next House every decade and will be represented by the symbols (stars) of the position. Viewing the In-born Chart and the Decade Chart in combination, particular symbols and patterns appear, the Ziwei practitioner is then able to analyze the life trend within the 10-year period, to caution the enquirer against potential risks and to provide suggestions if possible.

Likewise, we have a Chart for each year; the Houses rotate accordingly to the next position. When we intergraded the In-born Chart, Decade Chart and the Year Chart, we can tell the detailed life trend of each individual year.

If the 12-houses is the cross-section of life, then to find out the trend of the current year can be done by placing the 3 different cross-sections together, and analyze their influences on each other.

For analyzing current months and current days, the methodology is the same.
